In his regular column for Project Syndicate, Joseph Nye this month noted several measures of the tide of populism as it has manifested in the USA.
He asks ‘is the tide retreating?’ but in doing so, also urges careful consideration of what the high water mark may really be in the USA.
In fact, his lead in comment indirectly suggests that focus in this project, on seeking to identify the explanatory and normative value of that term when it is properly defined and calibrated, is particularly on target.
Strong support for immigration and globalization in the US sits uneasily with the view that “populism” is a problem. In fact, the term remains vague and explains too little – particularly now, when support for the political forces it attempts to describe seems to be on the wane.
